What is the Bowen Technique ?

The Bowen Technique is a soft tissue remedial therapy named after it's Australian innovator Tom Bowen. Unlike many remedial treatments, Bowen is gentle and involves rolling type moves across specific muscles, tendons, ligaments and fascia. It can often be performed through light clothing and is gentle enough to be used on everyone from infants to the elderly.

A unique feature of a Bowen treatment is that between sets of moves the therapist will leave the room and allow the client to rest. This is a key element of Bowen and is a defining aspect of the technique as well as being one of the most important. The break allows the body the opportunity to create a decision about what action needs to be taken in response to the moves given. The breaks are usually between 2 - 5 minutes and upon returning the therapist will assess any responses made by the body to the previous moves.

The work is very subtle, relaxing and gentle involving no hard or prolonged pressure. During a session the client will lie on a therapy table, although some procedures can effectively be carried out with the client in a chair.

An initial treatment will address the whole body. As a general rule, moves will be made over the lower and mid back and legs, the upper back and shoulders before finishing with neck moves with the client lying on their back.

What Responds Well to The Bowen Technique? Bowen

The most common problem is back pain and here Bowen excels. Sometimes in just a few treatments even chronic back pain can be successfully treated. Bowen is safe for pregnant women and can help them cope with lower back pain throughout their pregnancy.

Shoulder related complaints including frozen shoulder, neck pain and migraines can all respond well to Bowen.

Respiratory complaints such as hayfever and asthma can have a marked improvement after Bowen treatments and there is an actual asthma emergency technique that is taught to asthma sufferers for use in case of an acute attack. It can also stop hiccups!

There are many cases of Bowen helping improve Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, RSI, tennis elbow and other wrist/elbow related conditions.

As a holistic treatment, Bowen can also help with a wide variety of conditions in an indirect way as the body re-balances. Bowen has been used in this way to help people with conditions such as IBS, Crohns, poor circulation, slow digestion and ME to name just a few.

When booking a Bowen treatment for the first time, it is recommended that you plan to attend two treatment sessions, approximately one week apart. This allows the therapist to assess your initial response to the technique and follow up the first treatment accordingly.

In acute conditions, relief from the presenting symptoms can sometimes be experienced after the first visit. Chronic conditions may take longer.

"Hi Colin,

I have had practically no pain since the last Bowen treatment and have managed to sleep right through the past two nights, which is great as its the first in about 5 weeks. Back still gets a bit stiff at night but is not painful and the sharp pains in my leg has gone."
