Neuromuscular Therapy Glasgow

What is Neuromuscular Therapy?

Neuromuscular Therapy, also known as Trigger Point Therapy, applies concentrated thumb/finger pressure to "trigger points" to break cycles of muscle spasm and pain and to improve general function.
These points are painful irritated areas in muscle, congested spots of muscle tissue and areas of restricted blood flow; these can put pressure on nerves, which may radiate pain to other areas. Treatment helps to normalise and eliminate the dysfunction.
The technique is often used in combination with other treatments such as those used in Remedial and Sports Massage.

What is it effective at treating?

The most common complaints treated effectively are
• Back pain, especially low back pain
• Neck and shoulder pain
• Tension and Migraine Headaches
• Whiplash type injuries and associated problems
• Acute Sports injuries – including muscle, ligament and tendon damage.
• Achilles problems
• Tennis & Golfers elbow
• Pain in the ears, jaw or face

What to expect from treatment?

In your initial appointment a case history is taken followed by an appropriate assessment to determine the cause of your pain or dysfunction and then determine the best form of treatment for you.
Treatment is in 3 parts:
1. The physical treatment in the clinic of affected tissues
2. An explanation of how to avoid re-injury (e.g. Posture changes required or changes to warm-up and stretch routines for sport)
3. Customised exercises or stretches where appropriate and aftercare advice for you problem.Advice on treatments and what time frame you will ideally recover in.Nutritional advice pertinent to your problem.
What is the physical treatment used?
• Manual (hands on) techniques that I use include Soft tissue techniques such as remedial massage, Trigger Point Therapy,  Muscle Energy Techniques (MET)and Positional Release Techniques (PRT), Soft Tissue Release(STR), Myofascial techniques. Usually when the soft tissue is release joint mobilisation and manipulation may be required to correct misaligned pelvis or vertebrae etc.
• Frequency Specific Microcurrent (FSM) is used in most treatments. You can find detailed information on this treatment on the link on the left of the page. It is state of the art electrostimulation equipment used by Lance Armstrong and some American football teams such as the Philadelphia Eagles.
• Dry needling of trigger points. I use acupuncture needles to treat Trigger points in the muscles. Please note that as the patient you have an input on the treatment you receive. Needling is only done if necessary and with your full consent – it’s not for everyone and I respect that.
